Joel Peralta Ejected For Cheating - Ride the Pine

The old cliché states that “cheaters never win” and Joel Peralta learned this first hand as he was ejected from the game against the "Joel Peralta"Nationals.  Peralta was guilty of having pine tar smeared in his glove in order to have better grip on the baseball.  After the unexpected turn of events, he tipped his hat towards the National’s dugout as he walked towards the clubhouse.
Washington Nationals Manager Davey Johnson informed the home plate umpire that he should check Reliever Joel Peralta glove for a substance.
Peralta used to be the reliever for the Nationals back in 2010 before joining the Tampa Bay Rays, which suggests that Johnson may have had inside information against his former pitcher.  The umpires headed to the mound to inspect the glove of Peralta when they found that his glove in fact had an illegal substance later to be named pine tar.

Some critics may argue that this situation was simply “gamesmanship” or “cowardly” but rules are rules.  Ejections for the usage of pine tar are not new to Major League Baseball.  A notable player who also used pine tar is George Brett, ejected in 1983 for having too much tar on his bat.  After Brett hit a two-run homerun against the New York Yankees, he was enraged to find out that he was ejected from the game due to the excessive amount on his bat according to the MLB rulebook.

Ray’s Manager, Joe Maddon, was not happy with the underhanded tactic committed by the Nationals Manager because he believes he used inside information.  Davey Johnson insists that he could see the sticky substance from the Nationals dugout in Peralta’s glove.

Everyone is entitled to their own interpretation on the situation that took place Tuesday night but it will go down as one of Major League Baseball’s storied moments.  As for Joel Peralta, the league is expected to deliver a verdict Thursday for the Ray’s reliever.  The war of words continued between the clubs managers long after the Ray’s 5-4 victory over the National’s.  These two teams will finish out the series Thursday night in Washington with a 7:05pm start.
